[Avandhaan Manidhan] aatuvithaal yaaroruvar aadadhare kanna…

Another gem from Kannadasan, Sivaji’s acting is remarkable 🙂

Movie : Avandhaan Manidhan
Poet : Kannadasan
Music Director : MS Viswanathan
Singer : TM  Sounderajan
Song Sequence: (1)-(1)-(2)-(2)-(3)-(4)–(1)-(5)-(1)-(6)-(1)

aatuvithaal yaaroruvar aadadhare kanna,
aasaiyenum thottilile aadathare kanna,

who would not dance, if you made them dance? Oh Kanna (lord krishna!)
who is the one  not cradled by desires? Oh Kanna

nee nadathum naadagathil naanum undu,
en nizhailil kooda anubavathil soogam undu,

I am also playing a part in the drama you are directing,
in it, even my shadow, due to this experience (called life), portrays sorrow,

pagaivargalai naanum velven arivinaale,
aanal nanbanidam thortu vitten paasathinale,

I overcame my enemies using my intelligence,
However, I stand defeated by a friend due to affection,

paanjaali unnidathil selai kettal,
andha paarthanavan unnidathil geedhai kettan,
naanirukkum nilaiyil unnai enna ketpen,
innum nanami seithu thunbam vaangum ullam ketpen,

Referring to the folklore, where Draupadi (the wife of Pandavas) prays to lord Krishna to protect her dignity when Duhshasanan (Under his brother, Duryodhana’s command)  tries to disrobe her, and he (in all his awesomeness) infinitely extends her saree as it was being disrobed,

Next, referring to the war  of Kurukshetra, when Arjuna, in the battlefield pleads Krishna for clarity and vision of life and Krishna offers the Bhagavadgita,

In my current state, what can I ask you for? Oh Krishna,

All I ask is a heart that will do more good and will even take sorrow in return for it,

kadalalavu kidaithaalum mayanga matten,
athu kai alave aanalum kalanga matten,
ullathile ullathu thaan ulagam kanna,
ithai unarthu konden thunbam ellam vilagum kanna

Even if I get riches as vast as the oceans, I will not be intoxicated,
even if all of it became the size of my fist, I will not worry,
what is in the heart is the world! oh Krishna, (the out side world is just a pretense)
If one realizes this, all sorrows will vanish! Oh Krishna!

As usual another philosophical song. Nice explanations too.
Couple of corrections
1. In stanza 5, it was not DuryOdanan who disrobed Draupadi but his brother DuhshAsanan (under his brother’s command). Also கேட்ப்பேன்—> கேட்பேன். Two consonants (meyyezuttu) do not go together in Thamizh.
