[Indira] Nila Kaaigiradhu (Harini)

I am really excited to post my first “official” Tamil song to English translation. And I am even more excited to post this song (Nila Kaaigiradhu) from the movie “Indira”, for it was the first song as far as I remember asked by a friend for a translation 6 years ago. They say “Better late than never”. I hope I have done justice to the song and its translation.

A song penned by Vairamuthu and, music composed my A.R.Rahman could definitely make it a masterpiece. What makes this song stand out is the mellifluous voice of Harini, and the thoughts given out through a child from an amazing poet.

This blog is taking a complete new dimension. I could see that when translating this masterpiece. The number of times different thoughts were exchanged in making this translation was truly a great experience. The final version, I hope has managed to capture the child’s innocence  without compromising the poet’s command over the meaning of his verses.

Hope you all will enjoy it.

Cheers,

Movie: Indira
Poet: Vairamuthu
Singer: Harini
Music director: A.R.Rahman
Song sequence: (1)-(2)-(3)-(1)-(4)-(5)-(1)-(2)

Nila kaaigiradhu Neram theigiradhu
yaarum rasikka vilayae.
Indha kangal matum unnai kaanum.

The moon awaits as the time passes by.
No one seems to appreciate your beauty.
While my eyes would always admire you.

Thendral poogindradhu soolai sirikindradhu
yaarum sugikavilayae
Chinna kaigal mattum unnai theendum.

The grove smiles (its movement in tune with the breeze) as the breeze passes by.
Yet, No one seems to enjoy the comfort you provide.
However, these small hands of mine will feel it touching you.

kaatru veesum veyil kaayum kaayum.
Adil maatram yedhum illayae.
vaanum mannum nammai vazha sollum.
andha vazhthu ooyavillai yedrendrendrum vaanil.

The wind blows mightily and the hot sun beats down,
While there is no change in this nature’s gesture (downside of life),
The wide spread skies (symbolizing big dreams) and the beautiful landscapes (symbolizing family and friends) will always motivate us to live.
There is no stopping of this happiness in our life (like the blessing rain from the sky).

Adho pogindrathu aasai megam.
mazhayai kettu kollungal.
Idho ketkindrathu kuyilin paadal.
isaiyai kettu kollungal.

There goes the dear clouds (precious moments filled with happiness),
ask them for the rain (ask the happiness from its source).
Here you hear the cukkoo’s song,
seek music from it.
(Everything carries their sweetness associated with them,  look at the positive side and experience the happiness associated with them)

indha bhoomiyae poo vanam.
ungal pookalai thedungal.
indha vaazhkaiyae seedhanam.
ungal thevaiyai kelungal.

This world is like a forest filled with flowers (a place filled with plenty of opportunities);
search your flowers in it  (Try to search for your purpose in it).
This life itself is a treasure,
Ask your necessities in life .
