Ore oru oorile ore oru rajaa
Ore oru rajaavukku ore oru rani

Once upon a time, there was a King, who ruled his kingdom,
This king had a queen,

Ore oru rani petraal onbathu pillai
Antha onbathile onru kooda uruppadiyillai

This queen gave birth to nine children,
Among the nine, none was of any good.

Padichirunthum thanthai thaayai madhikka marandhaan
Oruvan padukkaiyile mullai vaithu paarthu magizhndhaan
Pidichcha muyal aththanaikkum moondru kaalendraan
Oruvan pendaatiyin kaalgalukku kaaval irundhaan

Even though one was educated, he forget to respect his mother and father,
One was so wicked that he would  rejoice by planting a thorn in the bed and seeing people suffer from it,
One was very adamant (derived from a tamil proverb : naan pudicha muyalukku moonu kaal i.e the rabbit which I caught had only 3 legs ( people who feel that what they say/think is always right)
One was just being a servant to his wife (guarding her feet)

Pillai petra raaja oru naayai valarthaar
Athai pillaikkumel kangalai pol kaathu valarthaar

The king who fathered these children also raised a dog,
he took care of it more than his own children, like his own eyes and protected it,

Unmai anbu sevai enru moonrum koduthaar
Athan ullaththile veedu katti thaanum irunthaar

he provided it (or instilled in it) truth, affection and service,
he built a house in the heart of the dog and lived there (The dog considered him as everything and had a lot of affection/respect for him),

Sonthamenru vanthathellaam sonthamum illai
Oru thunaiyillaamal vanthathellaam baaramum illai

Everything that came as your own, is not necessarily your own,
Anything that came to you without any support, is not necessarily a burden,

Nandri ulla uyirgalellaam pillai thaanadaa Thambi
Nandri ketta maganai vida naaigal meladaa

Any life form that has gratitude, is your child, Oh brother!
dogs are better than a son that had forgotten to pay gratitude to his parents.
