[Vaagai Sooda Vaa] sara sara saara kaathu …

Thanks to Sanjay for this wonderful translation of Sara Sara song penned by Vairamuthu. This has to be one of Vairamuthu’s best verses, its amazing how this man can imagine and pen the feelings of a longing young woman so wonderfully well. M.Ghibran’s music (this is his debut album) is mesmerising along with the refreshing visuals and actors.

We hope that Sanjay will contribute many more such gems to the collection!

Movie:Vaagai Sooda Vaa
Poet: Vairamuthu
Singer: Chinmayi
Music Director: M. Ghibran
Song sequence: (1)-(1)-(2)-(2)-(3)-(1)-(5)-(1)-(6)-(1)-(1)-(2)-(2)-(3)-(7)

sara sara saara kaathu veesum poadhu
saara paathu paesum poadhum
saara paambu poala nenjju satham poadudhae

When the drizzle filled breeze sweeps past,
and I run into a prattle with “sir”,
My heart rattles and hisses like a rat snake!
(heart becomes restless and excited)

ithu ithu ithu poana nenjju thaikga
otha paarvai paathu sellu
motha sotha ezhudhi thaaraen
moochsu utpada

My fray, frayed heart to seam back into position
needs a single gaze from you, look here before you leave,
And you take all that I have in return,
my breath even

tea poala nee enna aen aathura

Just like hot tea which is mixed and blown lukewarm by tea vendor,
why do you make me wait (and make my feelings turn cold)?

enga ooru pidikgudhaa
enga thaNNi inikgudhaa
suthi varum kaathula
sutda eeral manakgudhaa

Does my land fascinate you?
Does the water here taste sweet?
Does the aroma of roasted liver waft
in the swirling air of the country side,

mutta koazhi pidikgavaa
muRai padi samaikgavaa
ezhumbadhu kadikgaiyil
enna konja ninaikga vaa

Should I cull a country hen,
and serve you a gourmet of native dishes?
And when you feast on the tendons (bones),
it will remind you of me, come!

kamanjjoaRu rusikga vaa
samaichsa kaiya konjam rasikgavaa
modakgaadhan rasam vachsu madakgadhaan paakguRaen
raetdai thoasai sutdu vachsu kaava kaakguRaen
mukgannu noonggu naan vikgiRaen
maNdu nee kanggaiyae kaekgurae

come to taste the pearl millet that I cooked,
come to appreciate the hands that cooked them,
I have been trying to win you over with the rasam of vine balloon leaves,
I stand guard waiting with the twin Dosas I cooked for you.
While I am the 3 eyed palm fruit waiting to be served to you full,
you dullard! you seem to be only interested in the outer shell!

pullu kaattu vaasamaa
puthikguLLa veesura
maatdu maNi sathamaa
manasukguL kaetkurae

The remnants of your memory,
linger like the smell of fresh wet grass field
The constant chime of your thoughts,
ring in my ears like the cow’s bell

katta vaNdi otturae
kaiyaLavu manasula
kaiyezhuthu poaduRa
kanni ponnu maarbula

In my fist sized heart,
you drive a bullock cart,
Imprinting your signature,
on this virgin girl’s breasts,

moonu naaLaa paakkala
ooril endhdha poovum pookkala

My eyes have missed you for three days now,
none of the flowers of this land have bloomed since then!

aattu kallu kuzhiyila oranggi poagum poonaiyaa
vandhdhu vandhdhu paathudhaan kiranggi poaRaenyaa

I, like the kitten cuddle inside the niche of a grinding stone,
Longing to see you, only to retreat in embarrassment, upon sighting you,

meenukgu aengguRa kokku nee
kothavae theriyala makku nee

You are like the stork that longs for fish,
But you dullard! you don’t seem to know how to peck for your prey!

kaattu malliga poothirukgu kaadhalaa kaadhalaa
vandhdhu vandhdhu oadippogum vaNdukkena kaaychalaa

The wild jasmine has blossomed, is it in love?
The bee that keeps buzzing back and forth is not to be seen, is it not well (due to fever)?
