[Bharathidasan] Thamizhin inimai

This song by Bharathidasan typically explains the beauty of Thamizh not just with its essence but also by the examples chosen to describe the beauty of it. The examples are typical of Thamizh and South India.

கனியிடை ஏறிய சுளையும் – முற்றல்
 கழையிடை ஏறிய சாறும்,
 பனிமலர் ஏறிய தேனும் – காய்ச்சும்
 பாகிடை ஏறிய சுவையும்,
 நனிபசு பொழியும் பாலும் – தென்னை
 நல்கிய குளிரிள நீரும்,
 இனியன என்பேன் எனினும் – தமிழை
 என்னுயிர் என்பேன் கண்டீர்!

kaniyidai aeRiya suLaiyum – muRRal
kazhaiyidai aeRiya saaRum,
panimalar aeRiya thaenum – kaayschum
paagidai aeRiya suvaiyum,
nhanipasu pozhiyum paalum – thennai
nhalgiya kuLiriLa nheerum,
iniyana enbaen eninum – thamizhai
ennuyir enbaen kaNdeer!

The flesh-pulp from sweet fruit,
   the juice derived from mature sugarcane,
The honey from snow-dew-flowers,
the sweet from jaggery when boiled,

The milk tendered from good-healthy-cow,
the cool tender coconut from coconut tree

Are indeed sweet to me, yet, listen,
I say Thamizh is my soul!

சுளை – suLai – the pieces of fruit like in jack fruit.
கழை – kazhai – Usually mentions cane, here it refers to sugarcane.
காய்ச்சும் பாகு  – kaayschum paagu – Many sweets are prepared from jaggery after melting it into thick paste by boiing with water.

பொழிலிடை வண்டின் ஒலியும் - ஓடைப்
 புனலிடை வாய்க்கும் கலியும்,
 குழலிடை வாய்க்கும் இசையும், - வீணை
 கொட்டிடும் அமுதப் பண்ணும்,
 குழவிகள் மழலைப் பேச்சும் - பெண்கள்
 கொஞ்சிடும் இதழின் வாய்ப்பும்,
 விழைகுவ னேனும், தமிழும் - நானும்
 மெய்யாய் உடலுயிர் கண்டீர்!

pozhilidai vaNdin oliyum – oadaip
punalidai vaaygkum kaliyum,
kuzhalidai vaaygkum isaiyum, – veeNai
kottidum amudhap paNNum,
kuzhavigaL mazhalaip paechchum – peNgaL
konjjidum idhazhin vaaybpum,
vizhaiguva naenum, thamizhum – nhaanum
meyyaay udaluyir kaNdeer!

The buzzing of bees in orchard,
the babbling of water over pond or river,

The melody arising from flute,
the divine hymn spilling from veena,

The lisp of toddlers,
the fondling talks from lips of maiden,

Are indeed to my seeking, yet, listen,
Thamizh and me are indeed like body and soul!

பயிலுறும் அண்ணன் தம்பி – அக்கம்
 பக்கத் துறவின் முறையார்,
 தயைமிக உடையாள் அன்னை – என்னைச்
 சந்ததம் மறவாத் தந்தை,
 குயில்போற் பேசிடும் மனையாள் – அன்பைக்
 கொட்டி வளர்க்கும் பிள்ளை,
 அயலவ ராகும் வண்ணம் – தமிழ்என்
 அறிவினில் உறைதல் கண்டீர்!

payiluRum aNNan thambi – akkam
pakkath thuRavin muRaiyaar,
thayaimiga udaiyaaL annai – ennaich
sanhdhadham maRavaath thanhdhai,
kuyilboaR paesidum manaiyaaL – anbaik
kotti vaLargkum piLLai,
ayalava raagum vaNNam – thamizhen
aRivinil uRaidhal kaNdeer!

The brothers who are dearest,
the kith and kin who are living around,

The mother who is kind and compassionate,
the father who never forgets about me,

The wife whose talks are as sweet as Koel,
the offspring upon whom love is poured upon

Are comparatively strangers, since, listen,
Thamizh resides thus on my knowledge!

நீலச் சுடர்மணி வானம் – ஆங்கே
 நிறையக் குளிர்வெண் ணிலவாம்,
 காலைப் பரிதியின் உதயம் – ஆங்கே
 கடல்மேல் எல்லாம் ஒளியாம்,
 மாலைச் சுடரினில் மூழ்கும் – நல்ல
 மலைகளின் இன்பக் காட்சி,
 மேலென எழுதும் கவிஞர் – தமிழின்
 விந்தையை எழுதத் தரமோ?

The twinkling star studded blue sky
along it is the full snow White moon,

The emerging sun in morning
along is the sea flooded with the light,

The descending light of evening,
it’s beauty reflected over mountains,

Are indeed a wonder, sayeth the poet, yet,
would he be able to describe the wonder of Thamizh?

செந்நெல் மாற்றிய சோறும் – பசுநெய்
 தேக்கிய கறியின் வகையும்,
 தன்னிகர் தானியம் முதிரை – கட்டித்
 தயிரொடு மிளகின் சாறும்,
 நன்மது ரஞ்செய் கிழங்கு – கானில்
 நாவி லினித்திடும் அப்பம்,
 உன்னை வளர்ப்பன தமிழா! – உயிரை
 உணர்வை வளர்ப்பது தமிழே!

senhnhel maaRRiya soaRum – pasunhey
thaekkiya kaRiyin vagaiyum,
thannigar thaaniyam mudhirai – kattith
thayirodu miLagin saaRum,
nhanmadhu ranjjey kizhanggu – kaanil
nhaavi liniththidum appam,
unnai vaLarbpana thamizhaa! – uyirai
uNarvai vaLarbpadhu thamizhae!

The rice derived from finest paddy,
the vegetable curry made with cow-ghee,

The beans which are one of its kind,
Rasam mixed with thick curd,

The yams prepared in good taste,
the pancakes which are mouth-watering

Are what builds your body, Thamizha!
Your heart and soul are built by Thamizh!

முதிரை – mudhirai – Refers to varieties of beans such as avarai, thuvarai, kaaramani etc., which are inherent part of south Indian cuisine.
கிழங்கு  – kizhanggu – Typically refers to bulbous roots. There are many varieties of yams and other roots are which are part of the primary vegetable used.
அப்பம் – appam – This is a food of its own kind and not exactly a kind of bread. More similar to pancakes.
