[Or Iravu] thunbam nergayil yaazh eduthu nee

What a song! Bharathidasan’s lyrics and Unnikrishnan’s rendition transport you to another level. If you missed hearing this one before, you definitely missed a wonderful showcase of the awesomeness of Tamil and its Pulavars :). This poem is written in a setting where a father is in conversation with his child.

The song has been featured in the movie Or Iravu (1951), but we like the Unnikrishnan’s rendition (which was set to music by Dhandapaani Desikar) better.

Enjoy this masterpiece!

Poet: Bharathidasan
Singer: Unnikrishnan
Music Director: Dhandapaani Desikar

thunbam naerkaiyil yaazh eduthu nee,
inpam saerkka maattaayaa?
emakkinpam saerkka maattaayaa?

When I succumb to the sorrows of life, won’t you play the harp
and add happiness to my life?
won’t you bring happiness to my life?

kaNNae, allal neekka maattaayaa?

to the heart which is deprived (devoid) of love/compassion,
won’t you sing in Tamil and remove the misery?
Oh Dear! won’t you remove the pain?

In this world that is surrounded by roughness (cruelty) and weakness,
to add feelings to the lives,
to add feelings to my life,
won’t you dance in the ancient traditional dance form of Tamils?
oh dear? won’t you dance and show me its beauty?

When understanding what is morally right (Dharma)? or what is valorous? is difficult,
when I do not understand them,
won’t you read to me couplets of Tamil divine poet’s Thirukkural,
oh dear! won’t you to read a couplet to me?

In the works by great Tamil scholarly poets,
where they illustrate what is internal state (of self, mind, heart, soul etc. is) vs the external (public life, work etc.),
won’t you imbibe them and showcase you ability, and in the process
won’t you become the jewel of our eyes; the ones who brought you this world,
Won’t you become the shining jewel of Tamil?
