[Subramanya Bharathi] Aatma Jeyam …

Aatma Jeyam (conquer thy self (mind))
Bharathi’s quest to control one’s mind and that being the ultimate source of bliss! This song is beautiful and powerful!

Poet: Subramanya Bharathi

Kannil theriyum porulinaikkaigal kavarnthida maattaavo?
mannil theriyuthu vaanam athunam vasappada laagaadho?

won’t the things in sight attract our attention (and  be reachable)?
won’t the heavens that are sighted on earth (in me), come to my possession?

(In these verses, the thing in sight and the heavens refer to the task of conquering the mind)

yenni yennip pala naalu muyandringiruthiyir sorvomo,
vinnilum mannilum kannilum yennilum mevu paraasakthiye!

longing over the repeated failure to attain it, should we give up on the task (of conquering the mind)?
Oh goddess parashakthi! the one omnipresent everywhere; in the heavens, this earth and my eyes! fill into my thoughts too, and help me!

yenna varangal perumaigal vattrigal yeththanai maenmaigalo!
thannaivendraa lavai yaavum peruvathu saththiya maagumendre
munnai munivar uraitha maraiporul muttrumunarntha pinnum
thannai vendraalum thiramai peraathingu thaazhvuttru nirpomo?

what boons? what glories? what victories? how many more noble things?
once the mind is conquered, they can all be attained is the truth;
this has been said by the sages of yesteryears though their sacred writings.
having realised this fact fully, will we continue to remain in this miserable state?
or start building the capabilities/skills to conquer the mind?
