[Thiruvarutchelvar] Irukkum idathai vittu illaadha idam..

This song which has been adapted by #Kannadasan from Sidhar paadalgal appears in the movie Thiruvarutchelvar. This philosophical song is set in a way that Shiva has a conversation to himself (by directing it to his wisdom) about the kind and state of people in this world!

One interesting aspect about this song is that a different adaptation of the same Sidhar Paadal was penned by Ka.Mu.Sheriff for the 1961 movie Panam Panthiyile, set to music by K.V. Mahadevan. It is very interesting how two different people adapted the song in two different settings! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF5uUu9LQvA

Thanks to Jeeva for the suggestion.

irukkum idathai vittu illaadha idam thaedi
enggenggoa alaigindRaar nYaana thangamae

Instead of realizing it within,
they wander searching for it everywhere else (where it is not)! Oh precious wisdom!
they are the ignorant ones! Oh precious wisdom!

unnaiyae ninaithiruppaan uNmaiyaith thaan uraippaan
oorukkup pagaiyaavaan nYaana thangamae
avan oozhvinai enna solvaen nYaana thangamae

there are the ones who always think of you (god), they always tell the truth,
but end up becoming foes of the society! Oh precious wisdom!
how do I describe the fate (the accrued effect of deeds of past birth) of such people! Oh precious wisdom!

nanjjinai nenjjil vaithu naavinil anbu vaithu
nallavan poal nadippaan nYaana thangamae
avan naadagam enna solvaen nYaana thangamae

Then there are the ones who hold venom in their heart but pretend to be affectionate by their words,
they act like good (noble) men! Oh precious wisdom!
how do I describe the drama of such people! Oh precious wisdom!

avan kadavuLil paadhiyadi nYaana thangamae

One strives and dedicates himself for service, but will be subject to intense questioning (by the society),
find and recognize him! Oh precious wisdom!
for he is one half of what divinity (god) is! Oh precious wisdom!

piLLaiyaik kiLLi vittu thottilai aattivittu
thaLLi nindRae sirippaan nYaana thangamae
avandhaan tharaNiyaip padaithaanadi nYaana thangamae

he will pinch a child (give suffering), while at the same time sway the cradle (help overcome the suffering)
he will then move away and enjoy the process (of how the baby overcomes its suffering), Oh precious wisdom!
he is the one who created this universe! Oh precious wisdom!
