peNNaagap piRandhdhavarkku kaNNuRakkam iraNdu muRai
piRappil oru thookkam iRappil maRu thookkam
ippoadhu vittu vittaal eppoadhum thookkamillai
ennariya kaNmaNiyae kaNNuRanggu kaNNuRanggu

Being born as a girl,
Sleep is only at two instances;
The first at birth; The next at death.
If you miss your sleep now,
You will not be able to sleep ever again,
Oh dear apple of my eye,
Sleep well, do sleep well..

aareeraareeree aareeraaraaroa aareeaareeraaroa
aareeraareeree aareereeaaroa aareeaareeraaroa

kaalamidhu kaalamidhu kaNNuRanggu magaLae
kaalamidhaith thavaRa vittaal thookkamillai magaLae thookkamillai magaLae

Dear daughter, sleep,
This is the time to sleep,
If you miss this time to sleep,
You would be sleepless,
For the rest of your life..

naalu vayadhaana pinnae
paLLi viLaiyaadal
naaL muzhudhum paada chollum theLLu thamizhp paadal

At the age of four,
It’s time to play at school,
And the sweet rhymes in Tamil,
Makes you want to sing them all-day- long..

eNNiraNdu vayadhu vandhdhaal kaNNuRakkam illaiyadi
eeraezhu mozhigaLudan poaraada cholluvadhae theeraadha thollaiyadi

At the age of sixteen,
There is no sleep for her,
As she struggles to master Fourteen languages (skills),
It becomes a constant problem, (that steals away the sleep)..

maaRum kanni manam maaRum kaNNan mugam thaedum
aekkam varum poadhu thookkamenpadhaedhu?

A young maiden’s heart changes
And will start searching for her guy’s face..
When she starts to pine, when would the sleep come?

thaan ninaitha kaadhalanai thaeRa varum poadhu
thandhdhai adhai maRuthu vittaal kaNNuRakkam aedhu? kaNNuRakkam aedhu?

When the time comes to be with her love,
If the dad opposes their love, how could sleep come?

maalaiyitta thalaivan vandhdhu saelai thodum poadhu
manggaiyarin thaen nilavil kaNNuRakkam aedhu? kaNNuRakkam aedhu?

When the wedded husband comes and touches the Saree,
In the honeymoon of the women, would there be any sleep?

aiyiraNdu thingaLilum piLLai peRum poadhum
annaiyendRu vandhdha pinnum kaNNuRakkam poagum kaNNuRakkam poagum

In the ten months of pregnancy and during child birth,
When she becomes the mother, her sleep goes away.

kai nadunggik kaN maRaindhdhu kaalam vandhdhu thaedum
kaaNaadha thookkamellaam thaanaaga saerum thaanaaga saerum

When the age comes in search stealthily after taking away the stability,
All the sleep that is lost so long, will come back on its own accord

This song was appropriate in the Pre-60’s . Would the women themselves agree to the theme now? They have already liberated themselves and gone beyond Bharathiyar dreams .

Perhaps it is time Madan Karky or some other Modern day Poet wrote about the sleeplessness for a) Students going thru 12+4+ ??? b) Job-seekers, c) Employees aspiring for increments and promotions, d) our children employed in the Gulf and USA hoping for visa extension or Green card e) Parents with an un-married son searching for a girl and worrying about how she will treat them , f) Young Parents desparately seeking admission for their kids in LKG , g) Man in the late 50″ worrying about his retirement and so on. I am missing Kannadasn and Vali to pen a song on the above lines.

Thanks a lot for recording your thoughts Mr. Ravindran..

As a woman, not confined to the bygone era, yet suffering from the sleeplessness, I do agree to the theme even today. Though the times have changed, few elemental emotions could not be changed, though subdued.

And I am also eagerly looking forward for a modern version of this song and I do agree that these and many more causes are adding stress to the current generation irrespective of the gender..
