[Aayirathil Oruvan (2010)] thaai thindRa maNNe

This one song is enough to showcase Vairamuthu’s prowess with Tamil. Such a beautiful choice of words. It seems to be written directed at the civil war in Srilanka and the fate of Tamils there.

Thanks to Logarajan for the suggestion.

Movie: Aayirathil Oruvan (2010)
Poet: Vairamuthu
Singer: Vijay Yesudas
Music Director: G. V. Prakash Kumar
Song sequence: (1)-(1)-(2)-(3)-(4)-(2)-(1)

thaay thindRa maNNae
idhu piLLaiyin kadhaRal
oru paerarasan pulampal

Oh Land, that devoured my mother!
This is a son’s cry!
A king’s lament!

nellaadiya nilam enggae
sollaadiya avai enggae
villaadiya kaLam enggae
kallaadiya silai enggae

Where are the lands covered with fields of grains,
Where are the courts that witnessed literary debates!
Where are the fields where the bows and arrows played!
Where are the statues born from chiseling stones!

kayal viLaiyaadum vayalveLi thaedi
kaayndhdhu kazhindhdhan kaNkaL
kaaviri malarin kadi manam thaedi karugi mudindhdhadhu naasi
silai vadimaevum uLi oli thaedi thirugi vizhundhdhana sevigaL
oon podhi soatRin thaen suvai karudhi
otti ularndhdhadhu naavum
pulikkodi poRtha soazha maandhdharkaL
elikkaRi poRippadhuvoa
kaatRai kudikkum thaavaramaagi kaalam kazhippadhu
maNdai oadugaL maNdiya naattai
mannan aaLuvadhoa mannan aaLuvadhoa

my eyes are dry and tired,
in search of the green fields where beautiful damsels play,
my nose has lost its sense
in search of the distinct aroma of flowers along the banks of cauvery,
my ears have distorted and fallen
in search of the sounds of the chisel sculpting the rock
my tongue has become sticky and dry,
in search of the delicious meat rice (Biriyani?),
is it fitting that the clan of cholas who carry the flag of Tiger,
fry and eat the meat of rats?
we have become like the plants that feed on the air to live,
what is the point in a king ruling over a kingdom,
that has become a godown filled with just skulls,

Crumbling bodies, departing lives,
a crying nation, A lamenting king!
is it a fruit eating parrot, or a corpse eating vulture?
is it a message? or is it suffering for past mistakes?
As the gongs reverberate, and the (male) elephants tremble,
will you take us back to the land of Cholas?
Oh dear if you help us reach our motherland,
we will lie there like the horses lying down for rest,
we will  cry and let our tears run like the stream,
the tears that we saved for the last 1000 years,
until then, until then,

Oh planets that revolve around my head,
even while you witness the distress of us Tamils,
do not shed tears,

the day that shoulders the night,
In anticipation of a dawn some day, do not cry!

the sword that while sleeping in the scabbard,
carries the rust accumulated over centuries, do not cry!

To swipe the tears of my eyes,
the harp that cries with me, do not cry!

Thanks a lot Sucheendra. Gr8 work..
One suggestion would be is that களிரு refers to the Male elephant..
Also the following lines are not proper,
